Brad Rant: Hey, How’s It Going?
I ask my friends, my peers at work, and random people in my travels – “hey, how’s it going?”
Many times, their reply is a quick – “I’m good.”
This answer is appropriate when the question is asked without much depth of thought, superficially, or as a general greeting.
Yet these words are much more than just four words.
They can be very meaningful when asked and received in true meaning, with honesty from both sides.
When I ask the question, I truly want to know how they are doing – and I’m prepared to engage with them.
In my experience, it’s very rare that someone will say “I’m good” and truly mean it.
To hit reset, my expression will show them I’m looking for a deeper answer.
Eye contact and pause. Kind of a gut check.
Usually, the person is relieved, as if they’ve been waiting for someone to ask and actually care about the answer.
We all want to feel heard and seen.
Then the valve is opened, and some steam can be released.
It’s been a rough day, my dad is sick, I can’t stand my boss, I feel lost or conflicted…
These are the days of instant gratification, short sound bites, curated beauty and perfection everywhere we scroll.
And we all feel more imperfect than ever.
We have very few venues to be vulnerable.
I believe we’re all craving relationship – to share our truths, hardships, and struggles.
To transform small talk into meaningful connection.
To see, and to be seen, as we really are.
