DIY Project: Essential Oil Play Dough

Play dough is surprisingly easy to make at home and it’s a great project for the whole family. We’re kicking it up a notch by adding some essential oils – play time has never smelled so good!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup water
1 ½ tbsp olive oil (any cooking oil is fine)
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
½ cup salt
Food coloring in various colors
Everyone™ essential oils

Some suggestions about aromatherapy

Adding essential oils to your kid’s play dough is a bit of a twist. You might be feeling a little nostalgic for that classic Play-Doh smell, but the addition of aromatherapy will help to improve the mood around the table, naturally.

We used our aromatherapeutic blends, which are incredible combinations of complimentary essential oils.

Here’s What To Do:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine flour, water, oil, cream of tartar, and salt over medium-low heat. Stir steadily until the ingredients form a ball – this should take less than 5 minutes.
  1. Remove from heat and let the dough cool on wax paper or other non-stick surface. Once cooled, separate into four equal pieces.
  1. Start by adding 4 to 5 drops of food coloring on each piece of dough, and knead to blend. Add more drops until you have the colors you want. Note, look for food coloring that contains no artificial dyes for easy cleanup and hand washing!
  1. Add 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) to each ball and knead again thoroughly. We used staff favorites Calm, Balance, Uplift, and Fresh. We also recommend Lavender, in hopes of a more mellow, easy-does-it play time.

Be sure to store in airtight containers. If the scent fades, add a few more drops of essential oils and knead again thoroughly. The dough should last for a few weeks.
