There are legends of healing lakes in Australia’s rich history. These lakes were said to heal wounds, cure respiratory ailments, and improve both skin and hair simply by bathing in them. Today, researchers believe that these lakes were, in fact, healing. They believe that the leaves of the melaleuca tree had fallen into the lakes year after year, lending the healing power of Tea Tree oil to the waters.

Antimicrobial Power

Tea Tree oil, or melaleuca extract, has been studied for decades. Its ability to fight fungus, infection and inflammation has been proven in several modern studies. Today, Tea Tree oil can be found in soaps, cleaning supplies and acne treatments. Tea Tree is currently being studied as a hand wash for hospital workers because it has such high effectiveness against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. We love it as an effective mold and mildew killer. Check out our DIY Bathroom Cleaner recipe – it’s easy to make and works great!

Acne

Several studies showed Tea Tree oil to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide (the most common acne treatment) at treating acne, with far less side effects. Tea Tree oil kills the bacteria that leads to acne while reducing overall redness and inflammation. Nature’s answer to annoying and painful breakouts is beautiful in its simplicity, just using two simple ingredients can help reduce acne and leave your face softer, smoother and calmer.

Calming Face Wash

2 oz Aloe Vera Gel
6 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

Mix together and smooth onto face. Allow the mask to stay on your skin for at least 15 minutes. This can also be used as a spot treatment. Simply dip a cotton swab into the mix and apply to occasional breakouts. The Tea Tree will work its magic on the breakout while the Aloe helps to calm and soothe your skin.

Scalp Health

Tea Tree oil was traditionally used for itchy, flaky scalps and today you will find it in many shampoos and hair treatments. The oil’s ability to soothe skin and regulate total skin health makes it one of the best essential oils to use for scalp health. You can add a few drops to your usual shampoo or make this easy scalp rinse that can be used before a shampoo.
