Inside Information: How Exfoliating Helps In A Deodorant Detox

We’ve suggested using our EO Lava Clay Exfoliating Scrub on your underarms during your deodorant detox. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at why exfoliating can help during the first 30 days after you’ve made the switch to natural deodorant.

Underarms Are Sensitive

Your underarms are one of the most sensitive parts of your body, and one of the few places that apocrine sweat glands exist. The combination of sensitive skin and hormone related sweat glands means any change could cause issues, but when the change is from a mainstream antiperspirant to natural deodorant, even more chaos ensues.

Let’s Talk Sweat Glands

Let’s review the kinds of sweat glands one more time so we’re all on the same page. We talked about them in our article, Why 30 Days To Switch To Natural Deodorant? If you want to read more about them. So, The eccrine glands are the ones found all over your body, these basically secrete salt water or what we commonly think of when we talk about sweat. These glands don’t produce anything that causes smell, they just help regulate our body temperature. The apocrine glands are more rare, and are only found on our bodies in places where hair grows. These glands secrete a protein in addition to the basic salt water sweat, that bacteria love to eat. The smell we associate with sweating is actually these bacteria breaking down those proteins. So, what’s the bid deal with antiperspirants?

The Big Stink About Antiperspirants

Well, mainstream antiperspirants are made with ingredients like aluminum that block both the eccrine and apocrine sweat glands from letting anything out. They are made to fill the glands and pores with a metal that will expand with moisture, effectively blocking the sweat glands from ever letting anything out. A new study clearly showed that antiperspirants added to body odor, and you can read about it here if you’d like more info.

Making The Switch Means Chaos – For Awhile

So let’s say you’re a person who’s used mainstream antiperspirants for years and now you want to switch to natural deodorant. To put it simply, your body is going to freak out. Once you’ve stopped using the antiperspirant (or mainstream deodorant – many have this same function) and your sweat glands are now free to do their job. What’s the problem, then? Well, all the stuff that hasn’t been able to freely leave your body is still in there. So, when you switch you will often experience a worse smell than you’ve ever experienced. It’s not the new deodorant that’s causing that smell, it’s your body re-regulating after its natural functions are allowed to work.

Why You Should Use Lava Clay on Your Underarms

Ok, so what does an exfoliating face scrub have to do with your underarms? Well, to put it simply, it can help remove the smelly stuff that your newly opened sweat ducts have to flush out. Lava Clay is known for its ability to exchange impurities found in the skin with essential nutrients found in the clay. We wrote all about it in our blog, A Scrub Above if you want to read more. By making a clay masque and applying it to your underarms, you can help speed up the detox process.

How To Make An Underarm Clay Masque

Mix the EO Lava Clay Exfoliating Scrub with enough water to make a thick paste. Then smooth that paste onto your underarms and let it dry (this takes about 10-15 minutes). You don’t have to hold your arms in the air, the masque will dry either way. We do suggest either wearing an old shirt (if you want to do other things while its drying) or taking this time to attend to other self care rituals (we love a short meditation and some aromatherapy). Once its had time to work, wash off the masque and enjoy smoother, softer, cleaner underarms. This is especially lovely after a hot bubble bath has opened all your pores. We suggest trying a bath with the EO Lavender Bubble Bath for a relaxing soak or the EO Eucalyptus & Arnica Bubble Bath for a refreshing soak. And, if you’d like to try our EO Organic Deodorant Sprays or EO Deodorant Wipes along with these lovely products, we have them all bundled in our EO Deodorant Detox Kits.
