Inside Information: Why It Can Take Up To 30 Days to Switch to Natural Deodorant

There are many reasons for people to decide to switch to natural deodorant. For some a doctor has recommended a change to natural deodorant, for others it’s a wish to reduce the toxic load, and for some it’s just the preference for the scent of pure essential oils over synthetic scents.

But, Natural Deodorants Don’t Work!

Whatever your reason, when you make the switch from a conventional deodorant or antiperspirant to a more natural deodorant there can be a transition period that can last up to thirty days. During that time, your body can actually smell worse than it ever has! This dirty little secret is why so many people think natural deodorants don’t work – they make the switch, their bodies react to the change, and they think the smell is the result of the new product. This is a logical conclusion, but one that is completely wrong.

Let’s Get Sciency

When you use a mainstream antiperspirant, the ingredients are formulated to block the sweat glands in your armpits (or wherever you may use your product). In our underarms, we have two kinds of sweat glands: eccrine andapocrine. Eccrine sweat glands are found all over the body and are part of the body’s natural temperature regulation systems. The andapocrine sweat glands are mainly located in the underarms and secrete proteins that bacteria love to eat. Sweat isn’t what smells, our co-Founder, Susan wrote about that here. The smell that is associated with sweat is actually the smell of bacteria breaking down those proteins. So, a mainstream antiperspirant will block those glands, preventing any secretion at all. This works successfully to control both odor and wetness, but it also blocks a natural function of our bodies – sweat. When you stop using these products, the body needs some time to learn how to sweat normally again. The backup of hormone-packed proteins in the andapocrine glands takes time to flush out, and the smell of the secretion can be powerful.

How To Survive The Stink

So, now you know that when you make the switch from mainstream products, you’re going to face a few weeks of not smelling great. That’s one thing to internalize and quite another thing entirely to live with. We understand, when members of our staff decided to make the switch we realized we were going to have to find a way to help people get through this difficult time. Here’s what we’ve found works best:

1.    Drink water, lots and lots of it.

Your body needs to flush out a lot of excess stuff, so give it all the water it needs to flush it out. The more you drink, the more your body will be able to move that stinky stuff out.

2.    Take Hot Salt Baths

Hot water is good medicine, and warm salt baths can encourage our pores to open up and release impurities. Soaking in a hot bath with an essential oil salt soak can help release the stinky stuff and let you relax.

3.    Reduce Stress

We all know that we sweat more when we’re stressed. Do what you can to reduce tension and anxiety during this transition. We love a little Lavender essential oil to help soothe a cranky mood.

4.    Give Your Underarms A Renewing Treatment

Moroccan Lava Clay is a wonderful remedy for skin, it can replace dirt and impurities with essential nutrients with every treatment. We found that taking some water and mixing it with the EO Lava Clay Exfoliating Masque and applying it to the underarms for at least ten minutes helped soothe, soften, and renew our hardworking underarms.

5.    Keep Some Wipes Handy

The EO Deodorant Wipes were created to help get you through the tough times. Keeping a few of these individually wrapped wipes handy will give you all the confidence you need to make the switch to natural.

6.    Watch Your Diet

What you eat can affect how you smell. During the first 30 days, try to avoid an excess of red meat, onions, and garlic. For more information on what to eat and what to avoid, this article by Berkeley Wellness has a comprehensive guide to eating right to smell great.
