Inside Information: Why We Choose Non-GMO & Organic

October is non-GMO month, and we’re taking a moment to talk about why we choose ingredients and produce products that are non-GMO and Organic verified.

Our company was founded on the idea that if we created products that we would like to use, others would also want to use them. In that spirit, we use non-GMO or Organic ingredients whenever possible because we believe that the type of farming that is done with those ingredients is better for both people and the planet.

When it comes to terminology, some folks don’t know the difference between non-GMO and Organic, so let’s take a quick look at what those terms mean. Non-GMO verified ingredients and products mean that the ingredients (or products) contain no genetically modified plants. We choose these because we feel there has not been enough research into how the genetically modified plants affect people and the planet, and we have found the farms that use non-GMO crops use less herbicides and tend to farm in ways that are more synergistic with our world. Organic ingredients and products contain only certified organic plants. That means that they are farmed without pesticides or herbicides, which is why they’re our favorite. We buy organic ingredients whenever possible, and we always have.

You may notice we’re talking a lot about the farming methods. That’s because we believe everything in our world is connected and has an impact on our health and the health of our planet. We consider the ingredients we use from the ground up; their potential benefits and detriments to the people that use them, the people that work with them in our factory, and the people that farm them all matter.

We were the first body care company to receive non-GMO certification for our products in 2012, and we’re proud of that fact. We support farming methods that are proven to be safe and sustainable, and we support the farmers that honor those traditions.

We also consider our factory workers, who are exposed to huge concentrations of single ingredients in the process of creating our products. Some ingredients are safe in small concentrations, but are potentially harmful in larger quantities. We choose the safest possible ingredients with our hard working family in mind, too, because we’re all in this together.

Non-GMO and Organic crops are gentler on our planet, the people that work with them, the people that use them, and the plants and animals that are exposed to them after they wash down the drains. We choose these ingredients because we believe they are the best possible ingredients – and the one’s we’d like to use! Look for the USDA or NSF Organic Seal or the Non-GMO certification on our products, because we’re proud that we work hard to make safe, effective, and beautiful products for us all.
